The company will cease its toner manufacturing operations in Oklahoma City by the end of December, laying off more than half of its 170-member work force.
The plant will continue making raw materials for mono and color toner manufacturing and consumable and spare parts for other Xerox products.
Operations will be consolidated from two buildings into a smaller, 340,000-square-foot space.
The announcement, made to employees Wednesday, is part of Xerox’s $400 million restructuring plan put into action two weeks ago that will cut 3,000 jobs worldwide, spokesman Bill McKee said.
The reason for the downsizing is two-fold, officials said.
"Globally, Xerox customers are printing more color, while more Xerox devices are being designed to use the more environmentally friendly, chemically produced toner, leading to a decline in demand for the conventionally produced black toner manufactured in Oklahoma City,” Richard Schmachtenberg, senior vice president of the company’s consumables development and manufacturing group, said in a statement. "These reductions, while very difficult decisions, help us reduce our cost base and drive operational improvements across the board.”
